Sib. 7.1: Downloading sound library
Posted by Kewl - 10 Jan 05:32PM
I just upgraded from v5 to v7.1.3 (download version) on Mac OS 10.8.2.
I tried downloading the sounds, but our network (UQAM) is set to block P2P activities and the Sibelius sounds downloading scheme is a P2P system. So I'm stuck if I want to download at work, where Sibelius is actually installed.
I tried downloading at home and there was no error message: the Pando Media Booster was connecting, but nothing was downloading, similar to no peers on a P2P network.
Is it just me or the idea of using a P2P protocol (thus not really guaranteeing download speed or even availability) for paid software is not the idea of century?

If Pando Media Booster does not find any peers, it downloads directly from its own content delivery network. It will take many hours, even on a fast broadband connection, to download Sibelius 7 Sounds.

I suppose the idea is that Pando shouldn't be slower than a direct download, and may well be faster. How long did you wait before deciding nothing was going to download?
I'm not sure if these links just load a small program that takes you back into Pando, but they could be worth a try:
Windows: http://www.sibelius.com/download/software/win/Sibelius7SoundsDownloader710.exe
Mac: http://www.sibelius.com/download/software/mac/Sibelius7SoundsDownloader710.dmg

Half an hour. I will exercise patience, but I still believe this is far from efficient solution.

Waited for an hour last night, nothing downloaded. This P2P thing is not good.

It downloaded a bit this morning from my home at 200 kB/s. 12 hours later, I want to continue the download, but nothing downloads and the progress bar has returned to 0%.
This thing is so unreliable it's not even funny. What is Avid doing to insure that I get the software that I paid for?
Why offer a download version if you can't insure a reliable way of downloading?

Does the download fail on different browsers?
I had a couple of interrupted downloads on AOL but Firefox worked fine. I also changed the computer power options to never sleep. Changing the settings back after download of course!

I'll do that, but in the meantime I really needed to install the sounds, so, I'm sorry to say, I had to rely on... Pirate Bay.

Hi Daniel,
I dread to think what you've downloaded.
We have another secure method of sending you the files so please get in touch with us first before resorting to untrusted sources.

ISO image files of the install DVDs. Installed the sounds (not the Sibelius app itself, that I already installed last week) and afterwards updated with the 'Sibelius 7 Sounds Update 7.1.2'.

So, Robin, how do you justify 86 hour downloads? How does Avid rationalize using a P2P download system when cloud storage is so cheap now?
This means almost 4 days of waiting until I can get back to work. Too bad I can't bill Avid for the delay.
