- 3Using a face made with RaceMenu on an NPC
Overview
This tutorial shows how to give an NPC a face you've created using Expired's RaceMenu. For using a face created only with the vanilla Skyrim sliders, check the following: Use the face of your player character for the NPC.
Required Tools
- Creation Kit: available on Steam (Menu option View -> Tools and then select Creation Kit)
- RaceMenu by expired6978
- NPC Nif Merge by Turulo
Using a face made with RaceMenu on an NPC
Create and export the face of the NPC
Inside the game, create the face of your player character using RaceMenu as usual. When you are satisfied with the results, unequip everything from your character (weapons, clothing, jewelry), as if you don't do this they will be exported with your character's face. Then, inside the character generation screen press the Z key to export your character's face. You will see a message like the one shown on picture Exporting your character's face.
- Note: If you don't see that message and you have set the shout key to a value different than the default Z try resetting the key to its default value
You can now close the game and go checking the files created for your character's head. Those files are stored in the folder (install folder)DataSKSEPluginsChargen. There you will find a .nif file (mesh) and a .dds file (texture), and the name of both of them will be the date and time when you exported your character's face, for example 1-10-2014 16-20-26.nif and 1-10-2014 16-20-26.dds for a face exported the 10th of January, 2014, at 16:20:26 hours.
You can open the .nif file using a tool like NifSkope and the .dds file using a tool like GIMP.To be able to open the .nif file in NifSkope, you have to add these lines to the nif.xml file first, which is located in the folder where you have installed NifSkope:
- <niobject name='BSFaceGenNiNode' abstract='0' inherit='NiNode'>
- Facegen node object for grouping.
- </niobject>
- <niobject name='BSFaceGenBaseMorphExtraData' abstract='0' inherit='NiExtraData'>
- Facegen extra data object.
- </niobject>
- <niobject name='BSFaceGenModelExtraData' abstract='0' inherit='NiExtraData'>
- Facegen extra data object.
- </niobject>
- <niobject name='BSTextureSet' abstract='0' inherit='NiObject'>
- Unknown
- </niobject>
Use an editor like Notepad or Notepad++ to open the nif.xml file and paste those lines before the last element ends (</niftoolsxml>).
Create the NPC
In the CK create the NPC as usual (you can follow this tutorial Adding a Follower NPC to Skyrim but don't spend too much time worring about his face as it will be overwritten by the face you have already created Just create the NPC with the same weight your character has, and give him the hair and eye textures you want.
Once you are done, press the Ctrl+F4 keys as explained here Fix the NPC face colour to create the nif and dds files for the NPC. These files are stored at the folder:
- the nif file will be located at: (install folder)DatameshesactorscharacterFaceGenDataFaceGeomMyPlugin.esp
- the dds file will be located at: (install folder)DatatexturesactorscharacterfacegendatafacetintMyPlugin.esp
with the name of your esp file instead of MyPlugin.esp.
Overwrite the NPC's face with the one you've created
Launch the NPC Nif Merge tool and you will see a window like the one shown in picture NPC Nif Merge tool.
- Note: If the Nif Merger doesn't launch and displays a message about a missing MSVCR100.dll, install the 32 bit version of the Visual C++ Redistributable for Visual Studio 2012 Update 4 tool, even if you have the 64 bit version already installed.
Drag and drop on the left side the .nif file of the face you've created using RaceMenu (in this tutorial, the 1-10-2014 16-20-26.nif), and drag and drop on the right side the .nif file of the NPC you've created in the CK as shown in picture Merging the heads.
- Check the Merge child nodes box
- Press the Match by Vertex button
- Select the items you want to be overwritten (in the picture, I've set these to the brows, eyes, head and mouth, but you can choose to merge only the head if everything else is fine in the NPC you've created in the CK.
- Press the Merge to target button and a message telling you that the merge file has been created will pop up.
Now, if everything has gone as expected, the mesh file for the NPC has exactly the same structure than the one you've created for him using RaceMenu.
Use the texture file for the NPC
RaceMenu also exported a texture file (.dds) for the face you created in game. You can also use this file for the NPC instead of the one generated by the CK. To do this:
- open the dds file generated by RaceMenu (1-10-2014 16-20-26.dds in this tutorial), using a tool like GIMP.
- Save it with the same name and in the same folder than the one the CK has generated for the NPC and make sure that the settings are like the ones shown in picture Uncompressed dds
- Compression set to None
- Check the box Generate mipmaps
After doing all this, your NPC will use the face you created using RaceMenu.

I've noticed that I cannot load my saved game and it will CTD at the loading screen and that happened to me after installing alpha 6 plugins release and making my character in racemenu using these plugins... But when I delete the plugins (skee.dll hudextension.dll) the game will load normally. |

Same issue here. Every time I try to load a save with this installed, it'll go to the load screen and then CTD, but it works fine without this mod installed. This is only the most recent update to SKSE and Racemenu Alpha 6. Not sure if it helps, but I've attached my load order below. |

I can't afford to lose Racemenu now especially after I made dual sheath redux works perfectly with it... I'm still investigating this issue and I think I'm kinda close to figuring it out... I'm thinking its something to do with other hud mods that conflicting with Racemenu plugins like a matter of time, iHud and SkyHud etc... I'm gonna uninstall them all and try a new game then saving and loading again after few mins of gameplay to see if it's gonna CTD or not. |

I'm posting my MO2 modlist here. Maybe you can look through it and see what mods we have in common in order to identify the conflict. Right off the bat, I can tell you that I am using iHud but not SkyHud or AMoT. I'm not using DSR either, FYI. |

Its the new version of XPMSSE (4.3/4.31) causing skee to crash, probably because of some untested/unimplemented skee function. |
commented Apr 20, 2018
Just tested and can confirm, removing the latest XPMSSE but keeping Racemenu works, or vice versa, but having both on crashes when loading a save. So aers is correct. |
commented Apr 20, 2018
You are right!... I've tried that also and it was fine... What a waste!... I hope it will get updated soon. |

Might actually not be an SKEE sided issue. The patch notes of 4.3 say something about EDIT: seems like XPMSSE now has scripts for MCM and RaceMenu bundled (if you choose the Racemenu option). So probably that's what breaks stuff compared to v4.20 EDIT 2: Even with that it seems like some people have problems, and I'm sorry if you already did that. Just thought it was worth mentioning. |

Nah there's definitely a crash on save game load. I tracked down the crash in skee and reported it to expired in discord; he'll fix it when he has the free time. |

Is there another mod that uses Skee64.dll other than XPMSSE ver4.31?... I want to see if the save game gonna crash again or not. |

Will simply reverting to v4.20 of xpmsse fix the issue, at least until it's fixed? |

@DragonJoe did for me. |

How I fixed the CTDs on loading a save with XPMSSE v4.31 and RaceMenu Alpha 6. While installing the latest version of XPMSSE, during the FOMOD installation, select the following options:

I appear to be getting CTD with alpha 6 aswell, going back to XPMSSE v4.20 does not appear to work for me. and trying what CycloneGamer mentioned did not appear to do anything either. I guess i'm doing something wrong? |

I have some weird crashes after CycloneGamer's fix still... After I boot up my computer next morning after saving, my saves won't load up to game, even though they did the previous day. I can always load the save without SKSE, but not with it. I can still play a new game with SKSE though. Very strange. Not sure if it's SKEE related though. Mind you, I can play the game without the dll file from SKEE. |
commented May 12, 2018
To be honest... I ended up asking 3 of my relatives with Ph.D. on computer science to assign their team to remake this dll build from scratch for me since it is an essential skse64 plugin for me now in Skyrim SE as it is in oldrim Skyrim before... You either delete this plugin for now and wait for the slow update process since they are doing it for free or asking someone you know in real life with knowledge outside of this community unless you want to deal with showy amateur responds. |

I'm not sure what is causing it but the game crashes on every character for Racemenu when loading, quick, auto and even normal saves cause a CTD. |
commented May 27, 2018
In my case, the peoblem is skee alpha 6. I tried to disable all of my mods and the game CTD when loading a save game. Then I tried to delete skee plugins and the game run fine. |

I've been able to use the latest skee alpha 6 with the previous version of XPMS 4.2 with great success. All latest features work. You just don't get the styles included with the latest XPMSE. You also don't have the options related to choosing ECE, Racemenu or Dealy Mutilation. However, all of these mods still work with the XPMSE 4.2 skeleton. |

I am trying to find the latest issue of Racemenu to install into my SE game. I have the latest SKYUI in, but this Alpha 6 leads me to Oldrim Nexus. I though Oldrim RaceMenu wouldn't work in SE? |
commented Jun 11, 2018
Those of you attempting to make this functional in SE should also resave both racemenu esp's in the SE creation kit, as the oldrim page plugins are using old form 43. While not necessarily a contributing factor to this particular issue as it seems to be SKEE-related, it's still a good idea as using old-form plugins can lead to save corruption. |

SOLVED! Just updated XPMSSE to 4.32 so now i can use both RaceMenu and XPMSSE !!!!! |

@TheDabKing, What did you do to get them to work? |

@capella07 I updated XPMSSE to 4.32 |
commented Jun 27, 2018
Okay, so I'm reinstalling everything (not related to SKSE/SKEE/XPMSSE, etc)so I'll give it a try. You didn't change anything other than upgrade from4.2 to 4.32? I'm still wary of going to 4.32, as there are recent posts onthe XPMSSE of people still having infinite load/crash issues with 4.32... …On Wed, Jun 27, 2018 at 10:08 AM TheDabKing ***@***.***> wrote: @capella07 <https://github.com/capella07> I updated XPMSSE to 4.32 — You are receiving this because you were mentioned. @capella07 I was on 4.31 and had CTD (Crash To Desktop). I only upgraded to 4.32 with NMM (Nexus Mod Manager) and that's all. |
commented Jun 27, 2018
My crashes also still continued even after I tried 4.32. I'm simply sticking with 4.20 until the next Racemenu update comes out and until the Styles functionality for the skeleton is considered stable. |
commented Jun 27, 2018
@TheDabKing, Okay, thanks. I'm still not sure if I'll upgrade, but I'm on afresh game, so I suppose I wouldn't be losing much if I run into save gamecorruption issues or something. …On Wed, Jun 27, 2018 at 2:26 PM PsychoWookiee ***@***.***> wrote: My crashes also still continued even after I tried 4.32. @wooby6, Yeah - I already have that installed. I just don't remember atthis point if I first installed that before or after I was getting CTDswith XPMSSE v4.31.Also, I'm running ECE, not Racemenu. It was my understanding that thecrashes were due to ECE and SKEE, but am I wrong on that? …On Wed, Jun 27, 2018 at 7:54 PM wooby6 ***@***.***> wrote: Or you can all just install SSE Engine Fixes <https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/17230> until expired get around to fixing it (it fixes all Load CTD issues, And I'm running Alpha6 + Racemenu + XPMSSE 4.32) — You are receiving this because you were mentioned. How To Open Racemenu Skyrim

The crashes are due in part to the buggy alpha of SSE, So it's been recommended to install SSE Engine Fixes across many forums, this does indeed solve the issue with racemenu (in fact it even mentions this on the nexus page), EDIT: Fixes load CTD for ECE as well XPMSSE v4.3.2 - ECE |
commented Jun 28, 2018
I use SSE Engine Fixes with Racemenu Alpha 6 and that fixed the loading CTDs but I would still crash after a few minutes of playing whenever I had XPMSSE v4.31 or v4.32, that went away when I reverted back to 4.20. So, in my case, I'm very content with 4.20 right now until Racemenu itself gets properly updated. |

@PsychoWookiee that's a different bug then what the OP put, this issue is only for 'load game CTD' |

It's pretty sure that this plugin will definitely causes CTD when you're trying to load a save game. And the price to solve this problem is unsure as just unload it or using the fix patch existed on Nexus ---- which may cause other problems (watch the BUGs report area you will see ). |
