When you download the SAS files from the ITS Software Download site, the files will be compressed as zip files. For all those SAS users it would appear that the Portable version is no longer FREE, instead you can download a .exe version to a USB and install on infected computer without needing to update as it's bundled with the latest definition updates.
The Portable .com version is available but only if you want to buy a License.

Have also spoken to them about creating a bootable Rescue disc version, they replied with -
'It's something we have considered, but the demand isn't as high as for other features at this time.'
So am trying to get them to see sense in the idea now as a free alternative.

As far as I'm aware SAS is not affiliated with MBAM although they do allow for Developers to answer questions about them in each others forums but essentially they don't get on ( in a Love/Hate ) kind of way.
Also SAS is now owned by Support.com as of June 2011. MBAM is still Malwarebytes owned.

The existing portable will probably not load up as it checks the definitions and date, it will probably say you need to visit SAS to download the latest....
For a short while they were doing weekly downloads of the portable version packed with new definitions, now sadly no more unless you have/buy a License.

Or a version of SAS free on the PC you scanned.
I update every 7 days on the portable.
I just updated the portable free with no problems but it did want reinstall the machine version (which I did), scan started and my pro license recovered.

I only paid $9.99 for pro (about 8gbp) and am happy with it.
Just the free version, existing License holders are immune to the Pro/Tech edition as a License already exists, although, I am unsure how long this will last in terms of the Portable version as changes to the builds are continuing and more problems are arising with the definition updates.
Incidently Mike what build version is the portable you are using ?
The only version I get is SAS_624E9, the download file

The Build no. should be 5.0.1146 if you have the Tech edition of this then it would most likely have upgraded itself due to your license.
The Tech version has always needed paying for however the Free Portable is no longer try the link for yourself : http://www.superantispyware.com/
There is a way around it but is technically illegal so I will not share on the Forum.
It looks to me like the non-technician (Personal) edition is still freeware. The SUPERAntiSpyware Portable Scanner Personal Edition is a great Freeware alternative . . .

The Portable was always a .com file but now it's a .exe file which needs to be installed on infected computer (not always an easy thing to do).
And any illegal version would be unlikely to install new definitions anyway. Thus rendering it useless.
Its a shame they've stopped the free portable option it worked good.

UVK portable's a good program, have been playing with it for about a week now.
Does require a somewhat basic (at least) level of techiness (is that a word) as there are a lot of options on offer, one of which is a reg backup which is handy with such a tool.
