The following table can be used to date the year of manufacture of a Marlin 336. It is also valid for determining most other Marlin firearm build dates from 1946 to the present. Marlin year of manufacture maybe determined from the following table of letter/numeral prefixs to the serial number.
Before I sign up on a Marlin-specific forum, I thought I'd try my luck here.
I'm looking for help verifying the manufacture date of an old 'Marlin Model 93' (exact info as stamped on top of the tang - NOT '1893')
I'll post pics tomorrow, but for now, here is the info found on the rifle:
Top of tang: 'MarlinModel 93'
Top of receiver: 'MARLIN SAFETY'
Top of barrel where it meets receiver: '30-30' (caliber, obviously)
Left side barrel by rear sight: 'SPECIAL SMOKELESS STEEL'
Top/side/front barrel:
The Marlin Firearms Corporation
NEW HAVEN CONN. U.S.A.-PATENTED
Bottom of tang - under lever: '1 1 6 8' (NO prefix/suffix letters - only 4 digit SN)
If there are any other markings, I did not notice them, but at the time I took photos, I wasn't looking closely and may have missed something.
I believe the barrel to be 20' with a mag tube of same length.
Straight grip stock.
'Curved' butt stock with steel plate.
It seems to operate as it should, but I have not fired it.
The finish on the steel is in rough shape with little bluing left on the receiver and 'patchy' finish on the barrel. Minor pitting on the receiver.
The wood is in decent condition, but appears to have been refinished as the wood sits lower than the steel where it matches up.
The barrel band that goes around the front of the stock is missing the screw.
Ultimately, I'd like to know what the rifle is worth.
It may be for sale and if it doesn't fall into the ridiculously high range due to it being 'collectible' I may be interested.
It looks exactly like this one I found online with slight variation in finish.

This date code is different than the one already listed, as Marlin rimfire rifles (other than the model 39 series) did not have a serial numbers until required to by Law after 1968. The first letter of the date code represented the month of manufacture while the second letter indicated the year.
